A valid medical exemption certificate is one permitted reason not to wear a fitted belt; carry the certificate and show it to police if stopped. Other narrow exemptions include reversing and qualifying short goods-delivery journeys. An ordinary motorway journey, a low speed limit or an uncomfortable belt is not an exemption.
