Cookies and local storage

Lanekind sets no advertising cookies at all. This page explains the browser storage that keeps your revision working, and the optional analytics storage you can turn off.

There are no advertising cookies

Three things this site does not do and one thing it asks about, said plainly, because a banner that lumps them together tells you nothing.

What Lanekind does use is local storage: a store inside this browser that the site can read and write, that no server ever receives automatically, and that stays on this device. It is what makes a session finish on a train with no signal. The table below describes core study storage and the additional analytics records.

The answer log is not a tracker

It is the biggest thing in that table and the one most likely to be misread, so it gets its own heading.

clearway.answers.v1 holds one row for every question you have ever answered. That is a lot of data about you, and it is worth being exact about what it is for: it is the thing the app is made of. Which question comes back tomorrow, how long until you see it again, your predicted score and your run of days are all worked out from that log and from nothing else.

It is not a profile assembled about you in the background. You wrote every row in it by touching an answer, you can see the whole of it in the app, and you can take it away in one screen. A tracker is something that watches you without being the point; this is the point.

The study records support revision, saved preferences and offline recovery. Analytics identifiers and experiment assignments are optional and only used after you agree. Your analytics choice and any pending update to that choice are also kept so a refusal or withdrawal can be respected.

What is optional

One category, one question, and two answers of the same size.

If you agree, Lanekind sends events to PostHog about navigation, study actions, saved preferences, reference reading and media use. It also measures active foreground time and records which experiment variant you actually saw, so we can compare designs. These events use fixed identifiers, not the text on the screen. They go to the European Union, at https://eu.i.posthog.com, against a random browser or account id rather than a name. PostHog also keeps its own analytics identifiers in this browser.

For your current account, the saved web analytics choice also controls whether verified web subscription events are sent to PostHog. These can include the product and offer, transaction identifiers, amounts and currency, trials, payments, refunds, renewals, cancellations and expiry. Joining them with app events helps compare conversion, subscription retention and revenue. Card and bank details are not included.

No free text is ever sent: not what you searched for, not the wording of a question, not the answer you picked, not your email address. That is enforced in code at the boundary rather than promised, and the privacy policy explains exactly how.

Until you allow analytics, the web analytics library is not loaded, no analytics identifier is set, and no client analytics event is queued. The server also requires an allowed web analytics choice before forwarding web subscription events. An unanswered question is never treated as a yes.

Clearing it, and what clearing it costs

You can wipe all of this from your browser’s settings — but read what goes with it first.

Every browser has a way to clear a site’s storage, usually under privacy or site settings, and doing it for this site removes its local records. That is a blunt instrument, and it is worth knowing what it takes with it:

  • Any work that has not finished syncing can be lost. Anonymous accounts can sync too, but without a linked email address you may be unable to recover that account after its local sign-in token has been removed.
  • Your sign-in. A linked account can be recovered using its email address.
  • Your answer to the question above, which means you would be asked it again — and client analytics would stay off until you allowed them.

Clearing browser storage does not itself notify the server that you have withdrawn permission for web subscription analytics. Use the choice above to withdraw before clearing storage, and allow that choice to sync while you are online.

Clearing local storage does not delete a synced account, even if you never linked an email address. Use account deletion while you can still access that identity to remove its synced study records. Other offline devices may retain local copies until they reconnect or their storage is cleared. The privacy policy explains payment recovery records and previously collected analytics.
