ABS monitors wheel rotation and intervenes when braking would otherwise lock a wheel. The threshold depends on the available grip, so it is not defined by “excessive” pedal pressure. In an emergency, apply firm sustained pressure, keep steering and do not pump the pedal unless the vehicle handbook says otherwise.
