A short journey does not remove animal welfare duties: handlers must be trained or competent for their tasks. Use suitable handling, transport and care for the species. Current APHA guidance requires a certificate of competence for the specified farm species when road transport exceeds 65 km; a short-distance exemption is not permission for untrained handling.
