If you aren't sure of the speed limit, a good indication is the presence of street lights. In England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, if there's street lighting, the speed limit will usually be 30 mph unless otherwise indicated.
In Wales street lights indicate a 20 mph speed limit unless signs indicate otherwise.
