A vehicle must be roadworthy whenever it is used. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle may invalidate its insurance. This is distinct from merely having an expired MOT certificate: driving without a required MOT is normally illegal, but the current Highway Code does not say that expiry by itself automatically invalidates every insurance policy.
