A vehicle without a required current MOT may be driven to a pre-arranged test or to a garage for repairs required by a test. That is not a general return-journey exception: after a failure, a dangerous defect means the vehicle cannot be driven away, and the vehicle must remain roadworthy on every permitted journey.
