The rectangular “Max speed 20” plate gives an advisory maximum for the loose surface; it is not a red-ring mandatory speed-limit sign. Slowing as advised reduces chippings thrown up by tyres, protects vulnerable road users and vehicles, and allows for reduced grip and a longer stopping distance.
