A fixed emergency telephone identifies its location to the operator. Use it only if you can reach it safely, staying away from traffic and facing approaching traffic while speaking. A mobile phone, location sign, marker-post number or in-vehicle SOS system can also help identify your position. If you cannot reach relative safety and exit safely, stay in the vehicle with seat belts and hazards on and call 999; do not walk into traffic to find a phone or post.
