For learner riding on a normal unobstructed lane, the central area is a useful starting position. Adapt it for visibility, oncoming traffic and surface hazards; do not cling to one fixed line or hug the gutter. More advanced positioning needs judgement and training, not automatic movement towards opposing traffic.
