Oil lubricates moving engine parts. Too little can cause overheating, wear and engine failure; too much can increase pressure, damage seals or become aerated by moving parts. Use the handbook’s level-check method and oil specification, keeping between its limits. Arrange removal of excess oil rather than assuming a high reading provides a longer service interval.
