For an unresponsive child, call 999 or ask someone to call. Open the airway carefully and check for normal breathing for no more than ten seconds. If breathing is absent or abnormal, give five initial rescue breaths, then follow the emergency call handler’s CPR guidance. NHS guidance describes 30 compressions to two breaths, compressing about one-third of the chest depth, approximately 5 cm for a child over one, at 100–120 per minute. Use one or two hands as needed for the child’s size. Infant technique differs. Take practical first-aid training.
