Variable speed limits manage traffic flow and improve safety when congestion is present or expected, and during incidents, roadworks or poor weather. Slowing traffic in a controlled way helps prevent unstable bunching. Comply with red-circle limits even if the reason is not visible; a blank display does not itself cancel the previous mandatory limit.
