Use hazard lights. If safely out, wait well away from the vehicle and moving traffic, behind a barrier where available, and face approaching traffic while speaking. Report numbers and letters from a marker post or location sign, or use a mapping app or the vehicle’s SOS system. Use an accessible emergency phone or call for assistance. If you cannot get clear safely, remain belted in the vehicle, keep hazards on and call 999 for police. Never attempt motorway repairs or step into a live lane to warn traffic.
