Port and border officers have specified examination powers for counter-terrorism and hostile-state security purposes. A coach may therefore be subject to security examination on an international journey. This is separate from enforcement of tachograph, fuel-duty or roadworthiness rules. The applicable power and procedure govern the examination; do not assume every type of check has the same legal basis.
