For an ordinary car or motorcycle, national limits are 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. When towing a caravan or trailer they are 50, 60 and 60 mph respectively. A lower signed limit takes precedence. The limit is a maximum, not a target; conditions may require less.
