In Great Britain, an ordinary car normally needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, then every year. You may renew up to one month minus a day early and retain the anniversary. With an expired MOT, travel to a pre-arranged MOT test is an exception, but the vehicle must still be roadworthy and insured. Northern Ireland has separate testing arrangements.
