Repeated or continuous service-brake use can generate enough heat to reduce braking effectiveness: brake fade. Plan a suitable gear and use the fitted retarder as instructed on long descents. Retarders resist the drivetrain or engine rather than repeatedly using the wheel friction brakes, reducing lining wear. They do not replace the service brake for an emergency stop.
