Circles generally give orders: red rings prohibit something, while blue circles normally give a positive instruction or reserve a route for certain users. Upright red triangles warn of hazards, and rectangles provide information or directions. The octagonal STOP and inverted-triangle GIVE WAY signs are deliberately distinctive exceptions.
